BY DAYS

We will start in Ljubljana and head towards Vrhnika via the Ljubljana Marshes. Due to the extraordinary value of finds from the past, the Ižica pile-dwellings in the Ljubljana Marshes, together with other pile-dwellings around the Alps, were included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 2011. Wet meadows represent one of the most valuable habitats in Marshes and in Slovenia in general, where almost 6,000 different plants and animal species live. At Vrhnika you will enjoy a well-deserved lunch and midday rest. According to legend, the city was founded by the Argonauts, who, under the leadership of Jason, arrived along the Sava and Ljubljanica from the Black Sea. Their ship is depicted in the municipal coat of arms today. You will end the day in Logatec.

Soon after the start you will climb the Karst Plateau and see the fortified castrum from Roman times. From here, the path will lead us through the vast forests to the kingdom of the Knight Erazem in Predjama, where you will enjoy your lunch and a view of the unique castle standing high in a natural rock vault. Below Erazem’s Castle flows the Lokva stream, which formed the intricate karst underground. After lunch, you will see the mighty hill of Nanos. Hopefully without a cloudy lump that would bring worse weather as we continue our hike.

In the morning you will leave Nanos and set off towards the native Karst, where you will spend the whole day and walk along its entire length for two days. The word Karst comes from an old folk term for Stone and originally meant a rocky landscape. From this word, the proper noun Karst developed and became the name for the whole area, which stretches between the Gulf of Trieste and the Vipava Valley and between the Soča Valley and Brkini. The geological phenomena in this territory are so specific that everywhere in Europe the term “karst phenomena” and then simply “karst” were accepted for all subsequent discoveries of similar terrains.

The sea! – but not right away!
Soon after the start, you will see the sea in the distance, but before that, you will take a picture in front of the Socerb Castle with the Adriatic Sea in the background. Socerb Castle (or Strmec Castle), was extremely important due to its exceptional strategic location in the past, although today’s image of the castle is very modest. Next to the Castle, there is the entrance to the Holy Cave, of which the legend says that the young Saint Socerb (san Servolo) resided in it as a hermit for two years after he converted to the Christian faith. Over the Karst Edge, you will go down towards the coastal plains – a landscape that is also known as Breg or Bržanija represents a real geological, geomorphological and climatic boundary.
You will reach the sea when you overcome the last serious elevation, the magic Tinjan. You will finish with a tour of Koper and walk the last few kilometres along the path right by the sea, along Parenzana, the former railway, another cultural and historical sight on our route
